Narcissistic Abuse

Narcissistic abuse refers to a pattern of manipulative and harmful behavior inflicted upon someone by a person with narcissistic personality traits or narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). This type of abuse typically involves exploitation, manipulation, and a lack of empathy on the part of the narcissist towards their victim. Common tactics of narcissistic abuse include gaslighting (making the victim doubt their perceptions and reality), emotional manipulation, belittling, blame-shifting, controlling behavior, and emotional or verbal aggression. The narcissist may seek to maintain power and control over their victim, often by undermining their self-esteem and independence.

Victims of narcissistic abuse may experience significant psychological and emotional distress, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, and a distorted sense of reality. Breaking free from narcissistic abuse often involves recognizing the patterns of manipulation, setting boundaries, seeking support from trusted individuals or therapists, and ultimately detaching from the abusive relationship for their own well-being.
