Trauma
Trauma refers to an emotional or psychological response to a distressing or disturbing event or series of events. These events often involve a threat to one's physical or emotional well-being and can have lasting effects on a person's mental health and behavior. Trauma can result from a wide range of experiences, including but not limited to accidents, natural disasters, violence, abuse, or loss of a loved one.
There are different types of trauma, including acute trauma, which occurs from a single event, and complex trauma, which arises from prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic events, often in interpersonal relationships. Symptoms of trauma can vary widely but may include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, avoidance behaviors, difficulty regulating emotions, and disruptions in relationships.
Relational trauma refers to traumatic experiences that occur within the context of interpersonal relationships, often involving betrayal, abuse, neglect, or other forms of harm inflicted by someone with whom the individual has a close relationship. Unlike other forms of trauma, relational trauma specifically involves the violation of trust and safety within relationships.
